Yinka Olaito, Africa Lead of African Journalists with Disabilities, has compiled a new resource titled “Ten Guidelines for Ethical Disability Reporting in Africa: A Guide to Africa Disability Journalism and Inclusive Africa Newsrooms.”

The guide is designed to support journalists, editors, media organisations and other communication professionals in reporting disability issues with greater accuracy, dignity and inclusion. It recognises the important role the media plays in shaping public understanding of disability and influencing how people with disabilities are represented in society.

The guidelines encourage journalists to move beyond stereotypes, pity-based narratives and sensationalism, while promoting reporting that reflects the rights, experiences, contributions and diverse voices of people with disabilities.

The guide also highlights the importance of using respectful and appropriate language, consulting people with disabilities as credible sources, protecting their dignity and privacy, and ensuring that disability is covered as an important social, economic, political and human-rights issue rather than only as a charity concern.

Beyond reporting practices, the resource advocates for more inclusive newsrooms where journalists with disabilities can participate meaningfully in the media industry, including in editorial decision-making and leadership.

According to Olaito, ethical disability reporting can help African media organizations tell more balanced stories, challenge misconceptions and contribute to societies where people with disabilities are seen and heard as equal participants.

The Ten Guidelines provide a practical reference for strengthening disability journalism across Africa and encouraging media organisations to embed inclusion, accessibility and ethical reporting within their everyday newsroom practices.

The guide is expected to serve as a useful resource for journalists, journalism educators, editors, media executives and organisations committed to advancing inclusive communication and responsible journalism across the continent.
